On February 18, 2024, a tragic incident occurred outside the Bridgeport Medical Lodge in Bridgeport, Texas, resulting in the death of 39-year-old James Brown III. At approximately 12:42 p.m., Bridgeport Police Department officers responded to reports of a physical altercation between two men near the facility's back entrance. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots during the confrontation.
Upon arrival, officers found Brown suffering from a gunshot wound; he was transported to Medical City Decatur, where he was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.
James Brown III was an employee of the Bridgeport Medical Lodge, though he was not on duty at the time of the incident. He was known for his dedication to his work as a dietary aide, his passion for antiquing, building with Legos, and collecting action figures. He is survived by his wife, Nikki Brown, their unborn child, and his children Izzabella Sosa, Akiva Brown, Donovan Brown, and Devon Brown.
The initial investigation led to the arrest of 23-year-old Bridgeport resident Nathaniel Dominguez at the scene. A firearm was found near him, and he was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. He was booked into the Wise County Jail.
Further developments emerged when surveillance footage obtained from a nearby business showed the sequence of events leading to the shooting. The video revealed that Brown was standing on the running board of his truck with the driver's-side door open, while Dominguez stood approximately 40 to 50 feet away at the rear of the vehicle. The two appeared to be exchanging words before Dominguez began shooting. This evidence contradicted Dominguez's earlier statement that Brown had been reaching for a weapon following a physical confrontation. As a result, Dominguez was arrested for murder on March 12 and released the following day after posting a $30,000 bond.
The community of Bridgeport continues to mourn the loss of James Brown III, remembering him as a beloved husband, father, son, and friend. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains ongoing, as authorities seek to bring clarity and justice to this tragic event.
