On August 5, 2024, 17-year-old Erick Alejandro Marin was fatally shot during a confrontation in a drainage area behind homes in the 800 block of Shadow Creek Boulevard in Buda, Texas. The Hays County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire around 5:15 p.m. and discovered Marin deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that two groups had arranged to meet at the location for a physical altercation.
During the fight, Marin drew a handgun and fired at a 21-year-old male participant. In response, a juvenile from the opposing group returned fire. The 21-year-old then took the firearm from the juvenile and shot Marin, resulting in his death.
The Hays County District Attorney's Office reviewed the evidence, including video footage of the incident, and concluded that the 21-year-old's actions were justified under Texas laws pertaining to self-defense and defense of a third person. Consequently, a Hays County Grand Jury voted to "no-bill" the case, meaning no murder charges will be filed against the individual.
While the 21-year-old will not face murder charges, authorities indicated that other juveniles present during the incident might still face charges related to their conduct. The investigation remains ongoing as the community and Marin's family grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy.
