On August 10, 2024, at approximately 2 a.m., 18-year-old Jesus "Chuche" Ignacio Garcia of Port Arthur, Texas, was fatally shot at the Beverly Place Apartments in Groves. Responding officers found Garcia in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his upper torso; he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex revealed several individuals in the parking area, with at least three appearing to be armed.
One individual, identified as 19-year-old Vonzelle Hall, was seen standing next to Garcia. The video shows Hall distracting Garcia before abruptly placing a handgun to his head. Garcia attempted to flee, but Hall fired multiple shots, leading to Garcia's collapse a short distance away.
Following the release of surveillance images, Hall's mother identified him as the suspect and provided a sworn affidavit to the police. On August 14, 2024, Hall surrendered to the Groves Police Department. He was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on a $600,000 bond.
Jesus Garcia was remembered for his bright smile and joyful spirit, with family and friends noting his unique ability to light up any room he entered. Funeral services were held on August 16, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Arthur, Texas.
