On August 18, 2024, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Fort Worth police responded to a shooting near the intersection of Miller Avenue and Hardeman Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 23-year-old Jacouryan "Coury" Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during surgery.
The incident occurred during a large gathering outside a strip mall, which escalated following an altercation between two women. As tensions rose, a man became involved in the dispute, and someone deployed pepper spray into the crowd. Witnesses reported that Johnson sought to confront the man involved in the altercation. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed 28-year-old Kevonte Williams firing a single shot, striking Johnson.
Following the investigation, on September 9, 2024, Fort Worth police arrested Williams on suspicion of murder in connection with Johnson's death. He was subsequently booked into the city jail. The arrest brought some measure of closure to the community mourning the loss of Johnson, who was remembered by friends and family on platforms such as Gun Memorial.
