On November 10, 2024, 16-year-old Jerome "J.J." Rambo Jr., a freshman at Burkeville High School in Newton County, Texas, was fatally shot at the Elam Event Center on U.S. Highway 190 East during a party. Emergency responders transported him to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 5 a.m.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Rambo's family expressed profound grief and a desire for justice.
His aunt, Jania Rambo, described him as a caring individual who loved his family, video games, and sports. She recounted the shock and disbelief following his death, stating, "I felt like I couldn't breathe. It felt like it wasn't real."
The Newton County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting, identifying persons of interest and conducting interviews. On November 27, 2024, charges were filed against an individual for tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair (a third-degree felony) and deadly conduct (a Class A misdemeanor). This individual was apprehended in another state and is pending extradition to Texas.
Despite this arrest, the family believes the main perpetrator remains at large. Jania Rambo indicated that the arrested individual, reportedly a friend of Jerome, was present during the incident but is not believed to be the primary shooter. She emphasized the need for continued efforts to apprehend all responsible parties, stating, "We're still wanting justice and missing him every day."
Sheriff Robert Burby underscored the importance of community involvement in resolving such cases, urging anyone with information to come forward. He stated, "The fact is if you allow something like this to happen in your community, you're really not safe. And you're the reason why. Because you're telling the person that commits these crimes that it's okay."
