On March 6, 2023, at approximately 1:15 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office responded to an incomplete 911 call reporting gunshots at a residence on Rogue River Drive in the La Riviera neighborhood of Sacramento, California. Upon arrival, deputies discovered four individuals inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds. Two victims, identified as 66-year-old Vicki Lynn Bright and 59-year-old Jack Vernon James Jr., were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two victims were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
In the course of their investigation, detectives identified 31-year-old Robben Luke Bryson as the primary suspect in the shooting. Bryson, who had been a houseguest at the residence and known to the family for years, was apprehended without incident on March 8, 2023, at a bar in Nevada City. He was subsequently charged with multiple offenses, including three counts of murder, attempted murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and animal cruelty, as a dog was also found shot and killed at the scene.
Following Bryson's arrest, one of the hospitalized victims, 63-year-old Bob White, succumbed to his injuries on March 9, 2023, bringing the total number of fatalities to three. The fourth victim remained in critical condition. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the motive behind the shootings. Bryson was held without bail at the Sacramento County Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for March 20, 2023.
The tragic incident has left the local community in mourning, as friends and family remember the victims. Vicki Bright, born on November 22, 1956, was a caregiver by profession and described as an "awesome, fun, loving friend" and a "go-getter." The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the shooting continued, with authorities urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
