On March 11, 2023, at approximately 7:04 a.m., 26-year-old Kamare K. Bailey was found deceased in his vehicle at the intersection of Green Sands Avenue and Camrose Street in Atwater, California. Officers from the Atwater Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision and discovered Bailey in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident marked Atwater's first homicide of the year.
Initial investigations did not indicate gang involvement, and the motive remained unclear. Authorities appealed to the public for information to aid in solving the case.
On May 21, 2023, after a thorough investigation, Atwater police identified 18-year-old Aryas Simpson of Atwater as a suspect in Bailey's death. Simpson was arrested by the Merced Police Department and booked into Merced County Jail on a warrant for murder.
