On June 15, 2023, at approximately 12:46 p.m., 37-year-old Amazon truck driver Ilkhom Shodiev was fatally shot while driving northbound on Interstate 5 near Lathrop, California. The shooting caused Shodiev to lose control of his vehicle, which veered off the freeway, collided with two parked cars, and crashed into a building. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the incident, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducted an extensive investigation utilizing surveillance footage, witness statements, and public tips. This collaborative effort led to the identification of 29-year-old Andrew Christopher Watson of Manteca, California, as the primary suspect. On June 24, 2023, CHP officers, assisted by local law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant at Watson's residence, resulting in his arrest without incident. Watson was subsequently booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of first-degree murder with an enhancement for the intentional discharge of a firearm.
On June 27, 2023, Watson appeared in the San Joaquin County Courthouse for his arraignment. During the proceedings, the judge informed him that the charges could result in a sentence of up to 50 years to life in state prison if convicted. Watson was appointed a public defender and was ordered to remain in custody without bail pending further court appearances.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigators have not disclosed whether a firearm was recovered during the arrest. The CHP continues to encourage anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Shodiev, originally from Tajikistan, resided in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife and two young children. He was remembered by friends and family as a principled man who worked diligently to provide a better life for his family.
