On July 24, 2023, 36-year-old Jorge Ramos and 26-year-old TaylorRaven Whittaker were found fatally shot inside a bullet-riddled blue Subaru sedan in the parking lot of Pelican Cove Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene around 6:50 a.m., where both victims were pronounced dead.
Ramos, a resident of Willowbrook, was known as a car enthusiast and active member of the local Subaru car club community.
Friends and fellow enthusiasts expressed shock and sorrow at his untimely death. Whittaker, from Carson, was remembered by friends and family as a kind and compassionate individual.
In the days following the discovery, authorities arrested six individuals believed to be connected to this double homicide, as well as a separate fatal shooting that occurred on July 22, 2023, on Angeles Crest Highway in Pasadena. The suspects, identified as members of a Los Angeles criminal street gang, were apprehended during a traffic stop in Panorama City. During the arrest, law enforcement recovered two handguns and two rifles from the vehicle.
Investigators believe the motive behind these attacks was robbery, with the suspects targeting victims parked in scenic or secluded areas. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged three of the suspects—24-year-old Luis Ventura, 18-year-old Marco Antonio Hernandez, and 21-year-old Abraham Ernesto Alvarenga Cortez—with murder and robbery related to the Pasadena incident. Authorities are working to determine the suspects' connections to the Rancho Palos Verdes double homicide and other similar crimes in the region.
