On August 18, 2023, Laura Ann "Lauri" Carleton, a 66-year-old businesswoman from Cedar Glen, California, was fatally shot outside her clothing store, Mag.Pi. The incident occurred after a confrontation with a man who made disparaging remarks about the Pride flag displayed at her store. Carleton, known for her support of the LGBTQ+ community, had previously faced harassment over the flag.
