On August 30, 2023, Angela Cummings, a 40-year-old resident of Richmond, California, was fatally shot in Oakland. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an event center on Linden Street, where Cummings was attending a memorial service for 22-year-old Tahmon Wilson, who had been fatally shot by Martinez police earlier that month. As attendees gathered in the parking lot, at least one gunman opened fire, striking Cummings in the head and causing fatal injuries.
In addition to Cummings, 29-year-old San Francisco resident Taivale Tautalatasi was also shot during the attack. Tautalatasi sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to Highland Hospital by a friend but later succumbed to his injuries. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Authorities have indicated that at least one person in the crowd returned fire at the shooter. However, the friend who transported Tautalatasi to the hospital reportedly refused to cooperate with the police, hindering the investigation.
As of now, no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the shootings of Angela Cummings and Taivale Tautalatasi. The Oakland Police Department continues to investigate the incident, exploring potential motives, including possible gang-related connections, though it remains unclear if the victims were the intended targets.
