On September 5, 2023, Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies conducted a welfare check at a residence on the 1400 block of Marty Avenue in McKinleyville, California. Inside, they discovered the bodies of three individuals: 58-year-old Kip Kari King, his 62-year-old wife, Kimberly Anne King, and 81-year-old Max Gerald Hunt. The Kings resided in the home with Hunt, who had been the boyfriend of Kip King's deceased mother.
