On October 2, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Atwater Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire in a parking lot located in the 2500 block of Shaffer Road near Fortuna Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 42-year-old Evangelina Ybarra and 41-year-old Ramon Lopez, both residents of Livingston, inside a vehicle. Both individuals had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly identified 42-year-old Daniel Corona Garibay, also from Livingston, as the primary suspect in the double homicide. Authorities described Garibay as 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 198 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen in the Atwater and Livingston areas, riding a red and black Honda motorcycle bearing California license plate 24E3412.
Atwater Police Chief Michael Salvador emphasized that this incident was not a random act of violence, suggesting a targeted attack. Despite extensive efforts, including serving a search warrant in the city of Livingston, Garibay remained at large. Authorities urged the public not to approach him if spotted and to contact local law enforcement immediately.
The tragic deaths of Ybarra and Lopez have deeply affected their families and the community. Ybarra leaves behind three children: Daniel, Marina, and Alex. In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support her children. Similarly, Lopez, who recently began a position as a safety inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration, is survived by his 3-year-old son. His family also set up a GoFundMe for his son's future needs.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with this case. The Atwater Police Department continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to come forward. They can be reached at (209) 357-6384, with Detective Sgt. Sarginson or Detective Vargas handling the case.
