On November 6, 2023, 59-year-old Corina Thompson was found deceased at her residence in Stevenson Ranch, California. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, ruling it a suicide.
Thompson served as a custody assistant at the North County Correctional Facility, part of the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.
Her death was one of four suicides involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) personnel within a 24-hour period. The other individuals included Commander Darren Harris, retired Sergeant Greg Hovland, and another unnamed employee. These incidents, though occurring in close succession, are considered unrelated.
The LASD has expressed profound grief over these losses and emphasized the availability of counseling services and peer support programs for department personnel and their families. Sheriff Robert Luna stated, "We are stunned to learn of these deaths, and it has sent shockwaves of emotions throughout the department."
In light of these events, the department is urging its members to monitor the well-being of their colleagues and to utilize available mental health resources. The LASD is also exploring measures to alleviate work-related stress to support its employees' personal and professional lives.
No arrests have been made in connection with Thompson's death, as it has been classified as a suicide with no suspects involved. The department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding these tragedies and is committed to providing support during this difficult time.
