On November 27, 2023, 33-year-old Hollywood marketing executive Michael Latt was tragically killed in his Los Angeles home. Latt, known for his work on films such as "The Birth of a Nation" and "Crazy Rich Asians," was fatally shot by 36-year-old Jameelah Elena Michl. Michl, a homeless woman who had been living in her car near Latt's residence, targeted him due to his friendship with film director A.V. Rockwell, whom Michl had been stalking.
Michl's obsession with Rockwell began after she appeared as an extra in Rockwell's film "A Thousand and One." Following the production, Michl sought a personal relationship with Rockwell, sending her gifts and numerous messages. When Rockwell did not reciprocate, Michl's behavior escalated to harassment and threats, including ominous letters stating, "My Glock is loaded" and "One pull of the trigger, and I'll be free." Rockwell obtained multiple restraining orders against Michl; however, the harassment persisted.
On the night of the murder, Michl forced her way into Latt's home and shot him multiple times with a semi-automatic handgun. Latt's fiancée was present during the attack. Authorities later revealed that Michl had been stalking Rockwell and targeted Latt due to his association with the director.
In June 2024, Michl pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and first-degree residential burglary, also admitting to using a firearm during the attack. She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a minimum of 25 years before parole eligibility. Sentencing is scheduled for July 10, 2024. This tragic incident underscores the severe consequences of unchecked stalking and harassment, highlighting the need for effective measures to protect individuals from such threats.
