On December 19, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Fremont police responded to reports of gunfire in the 3100 block of Medina Common. Upon arrival, officers discovered 53-year-old Darwin Foster of Oakland suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention from Fremont Fire Department personnel, Foster was pronounced dead at the scene.

The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of two individuals. On December 21, 2023, authorities apprehended 25-year-old Fremont resident Nyla Turner on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The following day, 26-year-old Oakland resident Darreis Buckley was arrested in West Oakland. Buckley, previously convicted of attempted murder as a juvenile, was charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Both suspects were held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and were scheduled to appear in court on December 22, 2023.

Investigators believe the motive for the shooting may have stemmed from jealousy, though specific details were not disclosed. The case was presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for formal charges. Fremont police continued to seek information from the public to aid in the ongoing investigation.
