On December 30, 2023, in the Foothill Farms area of Sacramento County, 10-year-old Keith "KJ" Frierson was fatally shot by another 10-year-old boy. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Greenholme Drive. KJ had just stepped outside to ride his new bicycle, a recent Christmas gift, when the tragedy unfolded.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, the young shooter accessed a firearm from his father's vehicle.
Initially sent to retrieve cigarettes, the boy found the gun, reportedly bragged about its presence, and then fired a single, fatal shot at KJ. The firearm was later determined to have been reported stolen in 2017, and the boy's father, 53-year-old Arkete Davis, was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Davis allegedly attempted to conceal the weapon by disposing of it in a nearby trash can. He was subsequently arrested and faces multiple charges, including child endangerment, possession of a firearm by a felon, and accessory after the fact. His son was initially detained and charged with murder; however, prosecutors later decided not to pursue charges against the child, citing that the sole criminal liability rests with Davis.
KJ was remembered by family, friends, and teachers as a bright and caring child who loved math and was always eager to help others. His funeral was held on January 13, 2024, where the community gathered to mourn his untimely passing and call for justice in his name.
This tragic incident has underscored the critical importance of responsible firearm storage and the devastating consequences of negligence, prompting discussions on child safety and gun ownership responsibilities within the community.
