On January 21, 2023, at approximately 10:22 p.m. PST, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, California, during a Lunar New Year celebration. The assailant, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, opened fire inside the studio, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to nine others. Among the victims was 67-year-old Muoi Dai Ung, a Vietnamese immigrant who had been living in the United States for over a decade.
Her family described her as an extroverted individual with a passion for dancing.
Following the attack, Tran fled the scene and attempted to continue his rampage at the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra. However, he was confronted and disarmed by staff members before he could cause further harm. Tran then fled the area in his vehicle. The authorities identified Tran as the sole suspect in the shooting. He was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with police in Torrance, California, on January 22, 2023.
Investigations revealed that Tran had a history of mental health issues and had previously reported unfounded allegations of poisoning and theft involving his family members. Despite these claims, there was no evidence to suggest a direct connection between Tran and the victims of the shooting. Authorities have not been able to determine a clear motive for the attack.
The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 57 to 76 and were predominantly regular patrons of the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. The community mourned the loss of these individuals, who were known for their love of dance and active participation in local events.
