On January 28, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., 14-year-old Steve Matthew Velez was fatally shot near Pecan Park in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of First and Pecan streets, adjacent to the Hollywood (101) Freeway. Upon arrival, they discovered Velez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
