On January 28, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., 14-year-old Steve Matthew Velez was fatally shot near Pecan Park in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of First and Pecan streets, adjacent to the Hollywood (101) Freeway. Upon arrival, they discovered Velez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Velez was a student at Montebello High School. Family members indicated that he had recently become involved with a gang, which they believe may have been a factor in the shooting.
According to LAPD investigators, two male suspects fled the scene in a vehicle immediately after the shooting. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, resulting in the closure of the First Street on-ramp to the southbound 101 Freeway for several hours during the initial investigation. Authorities suspect the shooting was gang-related.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown. The LAPD continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with information to come forward to assist in apprehending those responsible for Velez's death.
