On January 30, 2024, at approximately 12:17 a.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of gunfire at the Los Ranchos Mobile Home Park in the 20600 block of Waalew Road, Apple Valley, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 40-year-old Sommer Christine Kelly deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Her 18-year-old daughter was also present, suffering from several gunshot injuries; she was promptly transported to a trauma center and was listed in stable condition.
Investigators quickly identified Kelly's boyfriend, 51-year-old Clint Edward Griffith, as the primary suspect. Griffith had fled the scene prior to the deputies' arrival, prompting an intensive search. Authorities issued an arrest warrant and cautioned the public that Griffith was considered armed and dangerous.
On February 4, 2024, Griffith was involved in a carjacking incident in Barstow, California. During the event, he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Griffith was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition and placed under police surveillance. Upon recovery, he was expected to face charges related to the murder of Sommer Kelly and the attempted murder of her daughter.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community. Kelly was a mother of four, including a child with autism. Family members have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the children and cover funeral expenses. Kelly's sister, Brandy Tarin, noted that three of the children were present during the shooting, further intensifying the family's grief.
