The incident occurred in the 9400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, where Gaona was walking when a white Cadillac sedan approached. Two individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire, striking Gaona multiple times before fleeing the scene. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation into the homicide, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspects. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been reported, and the identities of the assailants remain unknown. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.

Prior to his death, Gaona had several encounters with law enforcement. In July 2020, he was arrested for burglary and grand theft auto. Later that year, in August, he was arrested on undisclosed warrants or holds. His most recent arrest occurred in November 2022 for grand theft auto.
As of now, the investigation into Luis Gaona's murder remains active. The LAPD continues to seek information from the public, urging anyone with details about the case to come forward to assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
