On May 20, 2024, Gunnery Sergeant Robert James McDonald, aged 35, was tragically killed in Twentynine Palms, California. McDonald, an active-duty Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Logistics Operations Group in Twentynine Palms, was sitting in his vehicle near a local dog park with his dog when he was fatally shot in an unprovoked attack.
The incident began earlier that evening when deputies received reports of a group causing a disturbance near Alpine Road and Old Dale Road.
A local resident confronted the group, leading to a confrontation during which one individual, identified as 18-year-old Rudy Garcia, fired several shots at the resident, who was not injured. Garcia then fled toward Knott Sky Park, where he approached McDonald's parked vehicle and, without provocation, fired into the car, striking McDonald. Despite being wounded, McDonald attempted to drive away but lost control of his vehicle, colliding with another parked car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Garcia was apprehended nearby shortly after the shooting. A handgun believed to have been used in the crime was recovered. He was charged with multiple felonies, including murder, attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, attempted robbery, and attempted carjacking, with several firearm enhancements. Garcia pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment.
McDonald's death was a significant loss to both his family and the Twentynine Palms community. He was a devoted father to two sons and was actively involved in local youth sports, having recently coached a flag football team to a championship. His commitment to his family, his service, and his community was deeply valued, and his untimely passing left a profound impact on all who knew him.
