On May 23, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Rancho Cordova, California, resulting in the deaths of 69-year-old Marylou S. Konvalin and her husband, 72-year-old William Konvalin. Early that morning, Marylou contacted emergency services around 1:15 a.m., reporting that she had been shot. Upon arrival at the residence on Hartselle Way, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies and Rancho Cordova Police officers found Marylou unresponsive near the front door; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside the home, authorities discovered the body of William Konvalin, also deceased from gunshot wounds. The primary suspect in this double homicide was their son, 38-year-old Thomas Konvalin. After the shootings, Thomas barricaded himself inside the family home, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement that lasted approximately three hours. Despite attempts by negotiators to persuade him to surrender peacefully, Thomas remained uncooperative. The standoff concluded around 4:15 a.m. when Thomas exited the residence through a back window, armed with a rifle. In response to the immediate threat, two SWAT deputies fired upon him, resulting in his death at the scene.
