On the evening of June 5, 2024, 33-year-old Betty Monyea Cummings was fatally shot in West Sacramento, California. The incident occurred at her residence on the 300 block of Bridge Place, following her return from celebrating her daughter's fifth-grade graduation. A juvenile, identified as one of Cummings' children, called the authorities to report the shooting.
Upon arrival, West Sacramento police officers found the child outside the home.
As they prepared to approach the house, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Demond Jones, emerged from the garage and was promptly detained. Inside the garage, officers discovered Cummings with a gunshot wound to her upper back. Despite immediate first aid and subsequent medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Jones also sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot. A firearm was later found concealed in a bush in front of the residence.
Family members revealed that Cummings was ambushed by her ex-boyfriend, Jones, upon returning home. Following medical clearance, Jones was arrested and booked into Yolo County Jail on charges related to the shooting. A vigil was held by loved ones the following evening to honor Cummings' memory.
