In that incident, which occurred on October 6, 2019, near Fisherman's Wharf, Spiers was beaten by San Francisco Police Department Officer Terrance Stangel, resulting in a broken wrist and leg. The case led to a landmark excessive-force trial against Officer Stangel in 2022, which ended with the officer's acquittal on three charges and a deadlock on a fourth.
Following the June 15 shooting, an investigation was launched by the San Francisco Police Department. On July 3, 2024, authorities made an arrest in connection with Spiers' death. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Hin Hoang, was apprehended in the early morning hours at a private residence on Harold Street, between Holloway and Grafton streets.
Hoang has a prior criminal record, having faced gun and marijuana charges in 2006. He is now accused of shooting and killing Dacari Spiers at the gambling den in the Mission District. Spiers' death marked San Francisco's 14th homicide of 2024, occurring during a period when the city was experiencing a decrease in overall homicide rates compared to the previous year. Dacari Spiers is survived by two children. His untimely death at the age of 36 brings a somber conclusion to a life that had already been marked by a highly publicized encounter with law enforcement, which resulted in a $700,000 civil settlement for his injuries from the 2019 incident.
