On July 27, 2024, a tragic sequence of events in Highland, California, led to the deaths of Jonathan McConnell, 38, of Corona, and Aaron Harris, 37, of Highland. The incident began shortly before 8 p.m. on the 210 Freeway, where McConnell, riding his motorcycle, was lane-splitting and collided with Harris's sedan, which was occupied by Harris and his two children, aged 2 and 5.
Following the collision, McConnell did not stop and continued to a parking lot at Joy's Lounge, located at 27141 Baseline Street in Highland, where he met with acquaintances. Harris, with his children in the car, pursued McConnell off the freeway and into the parking lot. Upon arrival, Harris exited his vehicle and began shouting threats at McConnell. As McConnell approached Harris's vehicle, Harris fired a gun at him. McConnell, who was also armed, returned fire. Both men sustained critical injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead despite emergency medical efforts.
A bystander at the scene suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to the hand, while Harris's children and other individuals present were unharmed. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.
