On August 2, 2024, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers from the Southwest Division responded to reports of gunfire near 1046 W. Martin Luther King Blvd., west of Vermont Boulevard, in South Los Angeles. Upon arrival, they discovered 50-year-old Steven Rayo seated in his vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head. His car had collided with two parked vehicles, indicating he was attacked while inside his vehicle.
Rayo was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead upon arrival. He was removed from life support shortly thereafter. Family members described Rayo as a hardworking individual who was preparing for a business trip to San Francisco at the time of the incident. He is survived by a 12-year-old daughter.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head, officially ruling it a homicide.
As of the latest available information, the Los Angeles Police Department has not announced any arrests or identified any suspects in connection with Rayo's death.
