On September 13, 2024, 16-year-old Domingo "Dominic" Carrillo was fatally shot in the front yard of a residence on the 1100 block of Oak Street in Red Bluff, California. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, Carrillo succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Red Bluff Police Department, in collaboration with the Tehama County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations, launched an immediate investigation.
Their findings indicated that the shooting was a targeted act, believed to be gang-related.
Through their investigation, authorities identified three suspects: 17-year-old Blake Michael Bush, alleged to be the shooter; 19-year-old Nathan Olney Reep; and 15-year-old Ryan Scott Piper. Arrest warrants were issued for all three individuals. On September 21, 2024, Bush and Reep were apprehended in Trinity County by local law enforcement officers. Piper remained at large for several days but was subsequently arrested on September 24, 2024.
In the legal proceedings that followed, the Tehama County District Attorney's Office sought to prosecute Bush as an adult, given the severity of the crime and his proximity to the age of majority. Reep faced charges of first-degree murder and entered a plea of not guilty during his court appearance. Due to his age, Piper's case remained within the juvenile court system, as state law prohibited transferring his case to adult court.
The tragic death of Domingo Carrillo deeply affected the Red Bluff community, prompting discussions about gang-related violence and youth involvement in criminal activities. Local authorities emphasized their commitment to addressing such issues to enhance public safety and prevent future tragedies.
