On November 13, 2024, Rachael Martinez, 31, and her husband, Jose Medina, 39, were fatally shot in their vehicle near the intersection of Union and Ash Streets in downtown San Diego. The couple was en route to a court hearing to obtain a permanent restraining order against Christopher Farrell, 26, with whom Martinez had a prior dating relationship.
Martinez had previously accused Farrell of domestic violence, false imprisonment, and sexual assault, leading to his arrest and the issuance of a temporary restraining order in October.
Following the shooting, Farrell fled the scene on foot. Approximately 45 minutes later, officers from the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department located him near West Juniper Street and Kettner Boulevard. Farrell fired upon the officers, injuring one in the hip. In the ensuing exchange, officers returned fire, striking Farrell multiple times. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The tragic deaths of Martinez and Medina have left their four children, ranging in age from 3 to 15, without parents. Family members have expressed profound grief and are now caring for the children. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and support for the children during this difficult time.
This incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of protective measures for victims of domestic violence. Despite Martinez's efforts to seek legal protection, the system failed to prevent this tragedy. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case to identify any lapses and improve future responses to similar situations.
