In the heat of a Nashville summer on the Fourth of July, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Etabo Malanda was tragically cut short. The young Black male was standing on the porch of an apartment at the Fallbrook Apartments on Dellway Villa Road when two armed individuals approached him. A confrontation ensued, and in a fleeting moment of self-defense, Malanda attempted to draw a pistol from his hoodie. Before he could, he was shot by the assailants.
He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify two suspects: 17-year-old Jaylin Brown and 21-year-old Raceme L. Crutcher. The motive for the fatal encounter is believed to be connected to an ongoing dispute between the parties involved. Following the incident, investigators recovered four firearms from the apartment, including the pistol Malanda had been carrying, which was later found to have been reported stolen.
On August 31, 2023, the first breakthrough in the case came when Jaylin Brown was apprehended. He was found driving a stolen vehicle near the James Cayce neighborhood and, after a brief foot chase, was taken into custody. Brown was charged with criminal homicide and juvenile handgun possession. Additional charges of vehicle theft and evading arrest were also filed against him in juvenile court. For a time, Raceme L. Crutcher remained at large and was added to Nashville's 'Top 10 Most Wanted' list in November 2023. U.S. Marshals eventually apprehended him. Crutcher was also charged with criminal homicide and was being held on a $250,000 bond.
