In the quiet town of Portland, Tennessee, lived Jeffrey Lynn Owen, a 73-year-old United States Marine veteran. His life, however, came to a tragic and unexpected end on a Friday morning in early January 2024, not in his hometown, but in the nearby town of Selmer.
The fatal encounter occurred at a gas station. According to reports, an 18-year-old male, Jakobe Hill, approached Mr. Owen near the gas pumps. The interaction escalated when the younger man forcibly took the veteran's hat.
When Mr. Owen then approached Hill, he was shot at close range. The wound proved to be fatal.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement was able to identify and apprehend a suspect. Jakobe Hill was taken into custody and has since been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Jeffrey Owen. The case against him is now proceeding through the legal system.
