Justin Marquel Glover, a 34-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the evening of Thursday, February 1, 2024. The incident occurred on East 48th Street, where an altercation that began inside a residence spilled outside and escalated into deadly violence.
The conflict reportedly started over a spilled drink inside a home where food and beverages were sold. Following a verbal dispute, both Glover and the alleged shooter were asked to leave the premises.
Once outside, the argument continued, and the suspect, Martel D. Cathey, is said to have drawn a firearm. As Glover began to remove his coat, seemingly in preparation for a physical fight, Cathey allegedly opened fire. Glover, who was unarmed, turned and ran, but Cathey reportedly pursued him, continuing to fire. Glover was struck multiple times and fell to the ground.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Martel D. Cathey was identified as the suspect and subsequently arrested. He has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Justin Glover. During police questioning, Cathey claimed that he acted in self-defense, asserting that Glover had brandished a weapon and fired at him first. However, investigators did not find a weapon on Glover, and witness testimony did not support Cathey's account of the events.
Cathey was booked into the Hamilton County Jail. The case is awaiting trial in the criminal courts. Justin Glover, a graduate of Howard High School and a father of six, was remembered by his family as a man who was full of life and deeply devoted to his children.
