In the late evening of May 29, 2024, a dispute between two groups of teenagers at Red Caboose Park in Bellevue, a neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 13-year-old Aayden Hayes. The young male was a beacon of joy to his family and was known for being a protector of his sisters. His mother remembered him as a sweet boy who never failed to show his affection with hugs and kisses before and after school.
The altercation, which had reportedly
stemmed from an ongoing issue between girls from the two groups, took a fatal turn just before 8 p.m. As the fight intensified, gunshots rang out, striking Aayden multiple times. His 16-year-old sister, An'Raya, was also wounded in the shooting. Responding officers found Aayden on the pavement of the park's parking lot. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His sister was able to make it to a nearby fire station, where she received immediate medical attention before also being transported to the hospital.
Witnesses at the scene provided a description of the shooter, which allowed West Precinct officers to quickly locate a suspect. De'Anthony Osasosifo, 15, was found walking on Highway 70, not far from the park, and was taken into custody. During questioning at police headquarters, Osasosifo admitted to possessing a gun and firing it during the altercation at the park. A specially trained ATF dog later located a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol, believed to be the weapon used, along Osasosifo's path of flight. The firearm had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Murfreesboro in 2023.
Following the investigation, Homicide Unit detectives charged De'Anthony Osasosifo with criminal homicide for the death of Aayden Hayes and attempted criminal homicide for the wounding of his sister. The community gathered for a vigil at Red Caboose Park to mourn the loss of the young teen, remembering a boy who loved his sisters and was taken too soon.
