In the courtyard of a North Nashville apartment complex on Father's Day, a verbal argument tragically escalated, ending the life of 17-year-old Ebonique Farris. A Black female, Farris was shot on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the Cumberland View apartments on 25th Avenue North. She was quickly transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but succumbed to her injuries.
The incident, which occurred around 2:15 p.m., cut short the life of a teenager who was remembered for a smile that could light up a room.
The man accused of the shooting, 23-year-old Anthony L. Brooks, did not flee the scene. Instead, he surrendered to the Metro Nashville Police who arrived at the apartment complex. During an interview with detectives, Brooks admitted to shooting Farris. Police recovered his gun at the scene. He has since been charged with criminal homicide for his alleged role in the fatal shooting. The conflict that led to the shooting was described by authorities as a verbal argument.
Ebonique was a student finishing her junior year at James Lawson High School. She was active and enjoyed praise dancing, music, and doing hair and makeup. She also had a love for volleyball and cherished spending time with her sisters and cousins. Her great-uncle remembered her as an innocent young woman whose life was taken away in an unacceptable act of violence, leaving her family devastated. A community vigil was held to honor her memory and the legacy she leaves behind.
