In the summer of 2024, a wave of grief washed over a South Memphis community following the violent death of 15-year-old Victor Cooper. On the night of Friday, July 5, 2024, the young man was fatally shot at the intersection of South Third Street and Trigg Avenue. First responders rushed him to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Victor's mother, Marketha Cooper, described her son as a good person and a dedicated
student who consistently made the honor roll. She shared that he had even been featured on the 'Ellen' show for his academic achievements. His younger brothers looked up to him as a role model who helped them with their schoolwork and sports. His family remembers him as a polite and nonviolent young man, making his untimely death all the more difficult to comprehend. His grandmother, Jesse Cooper, expressed her bewilderment, questioning why anyone would want to harm her grandson.
The investigation into Victor's death led to a swift arrest. A 17-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. In addition to the murder charge, the teenage suspect also faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Due to his status as a minor, the suspect's name has not been publicly released.
While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Victor's mother suggested the tragedy may have stemmed from a dispute she saw on social media, expressing her pain that a conflict between young people could escalate to such a devastating outcome.
