On July 8, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at NHC Healthcare Sequatchie in Dunlap, Tennessee, resulting in the deaths of Marchie Bubul, aged 81, and her husband, Kirk H. Bubul, also 81. According to Dunlap Police Chief Randy Phillips, Kirk entered the nursing home where Marchie was a resident, fatally shot her, and then turned the gun on himself.
The couple, long-time residents of Kimball, Tennessee, had been married for over fifty years, sharing a deep bond characterized by joy,
laughter, and sincerity. Marchie was born on May 30, 1942, in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, and pursued a career in education, specializing in teaching reading. She held a Master of Education Degree from Western Kentucky University and taught in several states before retiring and teaching at Chattanooga State Technical Community College. Kirk, born on January 12, 1943, was a graduate of Northwestern University and Indiana University. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force and had a successful career with Mobil Oil.
Investigations into the incident revealed that officers from the Kimball Police Department found suicide notes written by Mr. Bubul at the couple's home, indicating a premeditated act. Authorities have classified the event as a murder-suicide, with no arrests made and no other suspects involved. The Dunlap Police Department, along with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the local district attorney, conducted a thorough investigation, concluding that this was an isolated incident posing no ongoing threat to the public.
The community has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the Bubuls, remembering them for their dedication to each other and their contributions to society. Funeral arrangements were managed by Tate Funeral Home in Jasper, Tennessee, where condolences have been shared by family, friends, and neighbors mourning the couple's passing.
