In the early morning hours of a Sunday in April 2023, the quiet of U.S. Route 222 South in Brecknock Township was broken by a grim discovery. The body of a man, later identified as 54-year-old Miguel Vazquez-Ruiz of Baltimore, Maryland, was found on the shoulder of the highway. The location of the discovery was near the Lancaster and Berks County line.
An autopsy would later reveal the violent nature of his death; Vazquez-Ruiz had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The Lancaster County Coroner's Office officially ruled his death a homicide, prompting an intensive investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police. Investigators believe the fatal incident occurred sometime between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on April 23, 2023.
