On a Sunday in April of 2017, the life of 22-year-old Timothy Hughin Demeritt of Mohnton, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short. The young man, a student at Berks Technical Institute, was at a friend's house in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, spending his time playing video games with friends. An argument broke out, not even involving Demeritt, but another young man present, 19-year-old Alexander Murray of East Earl, decided to intervene in a fateful and reckless manner.
In an
attempt to de-escalate the situation, Murray grabbed a handgun belonging to Demeritt. Believing the safety was engaged, he pointed the weapon at Demeritt's head and pulled the trigger. The gun, however, was not on safe and discharged, striking Demeritt. He was rushed to Reading Hospital & Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to the single gunshot wound.
The immediate aftermath saw Alexander Murray facing serious criminal charges for his actions. He was charged with third-degree murder in connection with Timothy Demeritt's death. The legal process moved forward, and Murray eventually pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him.
The court, presided over by Judge Merrill Spahn Jr., handed down a sentence of 7½ to 15 years in prison for Murray. During the proceedings, Judge Spahn spoke to the grave responsibility that comes with handling firearms and condemned Murray's careless behavior. Murray offered an apology to Demeritt's grieving family and was also ordered to provide financial restitution to cover the funeral expenses and for damages to the home where the shooting occurred.
