In the late afternoon of a spring day in Philadelphia, 14-year-old Salah Fleming, a male eighth-grade student, was found just inside the doorway of a home on the 5900 block of Palmetto Street. It was Friday, April 28, 2023, and police responded to the scene in the city's Lawncrest neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. to find a tragic tableau. Salah had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead by medics who arrived at the house.
He was described by those at his school as a quiet, respectable, and hardworking student who had only recently enrolled at the Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School.
The incident that claimed Salah's life was a quadruple shooting. Outside the home, first responders discovered two other deceased teenagers: 17-year-old Malik Ballard was found on the sidewalk, and 18-year-old Khalif Frezghi was on the front porch. A fourth victim, a 16-year-old male and a fellow student of Salah's, was taken to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest; he was listed in critical condition but was expected to survive. Investigators believed the violence erupted inside the residence after two groups met for what was described as a 'transaction' that went awry, leading to at least two individuals opening fire.
The investigation quickly led to initial arrests. Shortly after the shooting, police located a black Ford Edge SUV that had crashed about two miles from the scene. This vehicle was believed to have been used by those involved in the shooting. Two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody after they were seen fleeing the crashed SUV. It is believed they had first driven the 16-year-old victim to the hospital. A gun was recovered from their vehicle, and they were subsequently charged with firearms violations. In the days following the shooting, police also identified two other individuals, a 22-year-old man and his 15-year-old cousin, as persons of interest who should be considered armed and dangerous.
Further developments in the case came a few months later. On Thursday, July 6, 2023, Philadelphia police arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. The case is now pending trial, leaving a community and a school to mourn the violent loss of three young lives, including that of Salah Fleming, a boy who was just at the beginning of his teenage years.
