On the evening of June 9, 2023, the life of 25-year-old Brianna Lartz was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire inside a home on Lowry Avenue in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. A devoted mother of two young sons, she was at a friend's house when the violence erupted around 9:30 p.m. Lartz was in the process of moving and was visiting her friend at the time. The shooting, which neighbors initially mistook for fireworks, resulted in her death from a gunshot wound to the head and left four other individuals injured.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the scene was chaotic, spanning several streets with discharged cartridge casings found both inside and outside the residence. Investigators quickly identified two persons of interest, Deshawn Russell and another man. The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred in connection with a planned cocaine sale that was arranged via text messages. Witnesses reported seeing two men firing shots inside the home. One of the men, Maleek Green, was found outside the residence with a gunshot wound to his leg and a handgun nearby.
For nearly two years, Brianna's family awaited answers and justice. A significant breakthrough in the case came in April 2025. Maleek Dionte Green, 27, was arrested in North Carolina by U.S. Marshals on April 2nd and awaited extradition to Pennsylvania. Shortly after, on April 16, 2025, authorities announced that the second suspect, 27-year-old DeShawn Russell, was also being charged. Russell, who is the father of one of Brianna's children, was already incarcerated in a state prison on an unrelated weapons violation at the time the new charges were filed.
Both Green and Russell face a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy, and attempted murder. The arrests brought a sense of relief to Brianna's family, who had endured a long and frustrating wait for progress in the investigation. With the apprehension of the two men believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting, the legal process to hold them accountable for the death of Brianna Lartz could finally begin.
