On a tragic afternoon in June 2023, 65-year-old Mary Lihosit, a female visitor from Irving, Texas, lost her life in a violent encounter in New Sewickley Township, Pennsylvania. The incident, which also claimed the life of 71-year-old Delores Selby, unfolded within a residence on Klein Road, sending shockwaves through the quiet community.
Authorities were summoned to the scene around 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, for what was reported as a domestic dispute.
The situation quickly escalated as the first responding officers were met by an armed and barricaded suspect inside the home. The gravity of the standoff prompted the deployment of the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit and SWAT team, who, along with several other police agencies, worked to contain the volatile scene. After a tense period, law enforcement was able to take the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Benjamin Selby of Zelienople, into custody.
Upon entering the residence, investigators discovered the bodies of two women, later identified as Mary Lihosit and Delores Selby. The Beaver County Coroner confirmed that both women had sustained multiple rifle wounds. A third woman who was also inside the house at the time of the incident was found uninjured. The investigation revealed a familial connection between the victims and the alleged shooter; Delores Selby was Benjamin Selby's mother, and Mary Lihosit was his aunt.
Following his arrest, Benjamin Selby was charged with two counts of criminal homicide and one count of kidnapping for ransom. He was subsequently arraigned and, due to the severity of the charges, was denied bail and remanded to the Beaver County Prison. A preliminary hearing had been scheduled for early July. However, in a final, grim turn of events, Benjamin Selby was found deceased in his jail cell on the morning of July 7, 2023. His cause of death has not been publicly released.
