In the fall of 2023, the life of a young woman from Allentown, Pennsylvania, was cut tragically short, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with immense grief. Sian Amaya Cartagena, an 18-year-old female, was fatally wounded by a gunshot on October 2, 2023. She succumbed to her injuries two days later, on October 4, 2023, at a local hospital.
Her death was initially investigated as a homicide, the 16th in the city that year.
Emergency services were first alerted to the incident by a 911 call from 21-year-old Ethan Nicholas Bastien. He reported that Cartagena had shot herself at a residence on West Green Street. When police arrived at approximately 5:30 a.m., they found Cartagena in a second-floor bedroom with life-threatening injuries. Bastien was present at the scene and was taken into custody. Initially, he was charged with attempted homicide.
Following Cartagena's death, the Lehigh County Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide, and the charges against Bastien were upgraded to criminal homicide. He was held at the Lehigh County Jail without the possibility of parole. Cartagena's family, devastated by their loss, remembered her as a young woman with many dreams and aspirations. Her mother described her as having 'so many goals, dreams and plans for herself and her future.' Cartagena was the eldest of five children.
The legal proceedings against Bastien took a significant turn in August 2024. The Lehigh County District Attorney's Office announced that all charges against him were being dropped. This decision was based on the findings of a second forensic expert who reviewed the evidence. The expert concluded that Cartagena's death was more likely than not a suicide. This expert's opinion was sought at the recommendation of the first medical examiner. As a result of this new evidence, Bastien was released from jail on August 15, 2024. The District Attorney's office stated that their investigation continued even after an arrest and that they act on new information as it becomes available. Cartagena's mother expressed her disbelief and pain at the decision, stating that she did not feel justice had been served.
