On April 1, 2024, 16-year-old Jeramyah Jerome Pollard of North Braddock, Pennsylvania, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident. The event occurred around 7:50 p.m. near the intersection of Margaretta and Pitcairn streets in Braddock. According to Allegheny County Police, a large fight involving numerous juveniles escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Jeramyah and the injury of another teenager, who was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
In the aftermath of the incident, authorities identified 18-year-old Darien Wallace of Braddock as the primary suspect. Witnesses reported that following an earlier altercation at a local park, some individuals went to a residence on Moody Street. Shortly thereafter, Wallace allegedly emerged from the home armed with a handgun, pursued the group, and ultimately shot Jeramyah and the other victim on Margaretta Street. As a result, Wallace faced charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. At the time these charges were filed, he remained at large and was considered armed and dangerous.
Jeramyah was a 10th-grade student at Woodland Hills High School, remembered fondly by family and friends. His aunt, Darchelle Thornhill, described him as a "wonderful kid" who had a passion for rapping and cherished his family. In the days following his death, the community held a balloon release in his honor at the site of the shooting, with family members urging witnesses to come forward and assist law enforcement in their investigation.
The Woodland Hills School District expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that this tragedy marked the third student from the district to fall victim to gun violence on Margaretta Street within a year. Superintendent Daniel Castagna stated, "Our district and community has once again suffered a tragic loss due to gun violence. Our collective hearts grieve for the family and for the community as a whole." In response, the district increased police and security presence at both the middle and high school campuses to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
