In the quiet neighborhood of Mount Oliver, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the afternoon of Saturday, August 3, 2024, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Dana C. Burks, a 49-year-old male, was found shot in the doorway of his home on Amanda Avenue. First responders arrived around 12:30 p.m. to find Burks deceased at the scene. His family described him as a loving and caring family man, a husband, and a father to seven children, including a toddler under two years old.
The
investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a suspect close to home: Dana Burks's 21-year-old stepson, Rasheed Horne. According to police reports, there had been a violent domestic dispute between the two men the day before the fatal shooting. This altercation resulted in facial injuries to Horne, for which he received treatment at a local hospital. Less than 24 hours later, the conflict escalated to a tragic conclusion.
Evidence from a Ring doorbell camera was pivotal in the investigation. The footage reportedly captured Horne at the scene, showing him entering the house before momentarily leaving to clear a malfunction with his firearm. He then re-approached and fired multiple shots. Following the incident, an arrest warrant was issued for Rasheed Horne. He turned himself in to the authorities early the next morning and was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
Horne has been charged with criminal homicide and carrying a firearm without a license. Following his surrender, he was awaiting arraignment.
