In the early hours of January 29, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded at Southside Johnny's, a gentleman's club located at 6400 West Market Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. At approximately 2:55 a.m., Greensboro police responded to reports of a shooting at the establishment. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Among the victims was 36-year-old Cedric Cantrell Monroe, who succumbed to his injuries, marking the incident as a homicide.
The altercation resulted in seven people being shot. Six other individuals sustained injuries of varying severity; four were treated and released from the hospital, while two remained hospitalized in stable condition. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a fight that erupted inside the club, escalating into gunfire.
In the aftermath of the incident, Greensboro police launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. On February 6, 2023, authorities arrested 26-year-old Dasean Aaron Hunter of Winston-Salem in connection with the shooting. Hunter was charged with second-degree murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was subsequently held without bond in the Forsyth County jail.
The tragic death of Cedric Monroe and the injuries sustained by others during the shooting prompted a safety review of Southside Johnny's. City officials conducted inspections to assess the establishment's adherence to safety regulations. The owner of the club voluntarily agreed to temporarily close the business and collaborate with city departments to enhance safety measures, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future.
