On May 2, 2023, at approximately 7 p.m., Winston-Salem police responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of Barry Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 69-year-old William "Bill" Bell Jr. lying in the street with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
William Bell Jr., born on December 28, 1953, in Jackson, Mississippi, was the eldest of six children. He moved to Los Angeles, California, during his youth, graduating from Locke High School in 1971.
Bell pursued a career in truck driving, working for the Harris Teeter Grocery Store chain, and later provided professional cleaning services in Winston-Salem. He was a devoted family man, survived by his wife of 35 years, Kim Bell, and their children and grandchildren.
As of now, the Winston-Salem Police Department has not released information regarding any arrests or identified suspects in connection with Bell's death. The investigation remains active, and authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the department or Crime Stoppers.
