On May 28, 2023, at approximately 8:22 p.m., Rowan County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported shooting at a residence on Old Beatty Ford Road near Rockwell, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Matthew Tyler King lying on the floor with a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The initial investigation revealed that King had visited the home of 49-year-old Jeremy Calvin Kepley.
An argument ensued, during which King allegedly seized a firearm within the residence and pointed it at Kepley. In response, Kepley retrieved a nearby "sawed-off" shotgun and fired a single shot, fatally wounding King.
Following a comprehensive investigation, including evidence analysis by the State Crime Lab and consultations with the Rowan County District Attorney's Office, authorities concluded that Kepley's actions were justified as self-defense against a deadly threat. However, due to the illegal nature of the modified shotgun used in the incident, Kepley was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction. He was arrested on February 5, 2024, and released on a $2,000 secured bond. No further charges are anticipated, and the case has been closed.
Matthew King, born on May 22, 2000, in Concord, North Carolina, was remembered as a hardworking individual with a passion for operating heavy machinery. Known for his caring nature and devotion to family, his smile was said to light up any room, and his laughter was contagious. He is survived by his parents, Richard Neil King and Kathy Williamson King, as well as his siblings, Chandler King and Kailey Campbell. A memorial service was planned to honor his life.
