On June 21, 2023, 25-year-old Christopher Knox "Lil Chris" Wery was fatally shot in Dallas, North Carolina. Dallas police responded to a call just after midnight at a residence on Eastway Drive, where they found Wery suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
According to prosecutors, Wery and a friend were at the home of 24-year-old Nicholas Max Tallent. When Wery was ready to leave, he contacted his mother to pick him up. After that call, Tallent allegedly fired six shots through his bedroom door, three of which struck and killed Wery. Tallent was arrested later that day and charged with second-degree murder. He was held in Gaston County Jail on a $500,000 bond, which he posted on June 22, 2023.
Wery's mother, Angela, expressed her grief and desire for answers, stating, "I want the truth of what happened because I wasn’t there, and I want to see justice be served where it need be." She recounted that during their last phone conversation, they exchanged "I love yous." Angela mentioned that she made a wrong turn on her way to pick up her son and believes that if she hadn't, she might have arrived in time to prevent the shooting.
The investigation into Wery's death remains ongoing, with Dallas police continuing to gather information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. This incident marked the first deadly shooting in Dallas since 2017, highlighting its impact on the local community.
