On July 17, 2023, 52-year-old Alvie Chavis Jr. was fatally shot in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred during an attempted armed robbery along the 300 block of Dallas Street. Chavis sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound and was later found deceased behind a residence in the 2000 block of Center Street.
Initially, 44-year-old Andre Lewis was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with Chavis's death.
However, upon further investigation, the charge was dismissed. Authorities determined that Lewis acted in self-defense under North Carolina's "Castle Doctrine," which permits the use of defensive force, including deadly force, to protect oneself against an intruder threatening death or serious bodily injury within one's home.
Subsequently, Lewis faced charges unrelated to the shooting, including possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of controlled substances. He was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center with bail set at $10,000.
In a related development, on November 15, 2023, Andre Lewis was found shot in a vehicle along the 1100 block of Center Street and succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2023. Following his death, 33-year-old Heather Shontell Lindsay was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Lewis's killing.
