On the evening of August 5, 2023, in Wade, North Carolina, deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a possible overdose at a residence on Sambo Jackson Road. Upon arrival, they discovered 48-year-old Brian Carter Vann and his wife, Jennifer Vann, both deceased from gunshot wounds. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident was immediately classified as a double homicide.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities sought to question individuals who might have had information pertinent to the case. One such individual was 43-year-old Eric Wayne Thompson from Erwin, North Carolina. However, shortly after expressing interest in speaking with him, the sheriff's office announced that Thompson was no longer a person of interest. Similarly, in April 2024, investigators indicated they wished to speak with 49-year-old Kenneth Eldridge Coats of Godwin, North Carolina, regarding the murders. As with Thompson, Coats was later cleared, and authorities stated they no longer sought to question him in connection with the case.
Despite these investigative efforts, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The double homicide remains unsolved, with detectives continuing to seek information from the public to aid in their investigation. The tragic deaths of Brian and Jennifer Vann have left a void in the community, especially for their young daughter, who now faces life without her parents.
As of December 2024, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office continues to encourage anyone with information about the case to come forward, hoping that new leads might emerge to bring justice for the Vann family.
